What You Wear Matters

Even if you’re applying for a casual atmosphere you need to wear business attire. Men should wear slacks, a button-down shirt, and a tie. Women should wear a business suit, whether it’s a skirt or slacks.

How You Wear It Matters

You can wear the most expensive suit in the world, but none of that matters if you picked it up off the floor. Wrinkled clothes, clothes with holes, or food stains can ruin even the best look. Make sure you’ve prepared your outfit well ahead of time and that it’s properly pressed and free of stains.

Grooming Matters

Make sure your hands are clean, especially under your nails. If you wear nail polish, avoid super bright colors or designs for the interview, although you might find out that’s all right with the dress code later on. Your hair should be combed and neatly groomed. If you wear makeup, tone it down at least for the interview, until you’ve learned more about the dress code.

Your Shoes Matter

Interviewers are paying attention to every detail from the moment you walk in the door. They’re trying to get a good picture of you, so when you walk in wearing flip-flops or Crocs, you’re not making the greatest impression. If they’re scuffed, take a few minutes to polish them up.

Your Expression Matters

You’re nervous, but do your best to relax. Smile, shake hands, and do your best to try not to look as nervous as you might feel inside. Your expression should look approachable and professional, giving potential employers the impression that you will make a great member of their team.
